The Beautiful Girl We Couldn’t Save

Meet 17CF307 & 18CF274. .

That’s how Defendants are seen in courtrooms in America. Another file, another case number, another day.

Those case numbers mean so much more. That’s a human being. It’s a beautiful girl who had the odds stacked against her. A young defendant being punished for not having good parents and for being a victim of sex trafficking. A lost soul that needed guidance and love.

Meet our angel Madalyn Nicole Popik, the Defendant in 17CF307 & 18CF274. Mady’s version of this post would be way more entertaining. Sadly, I can’t give that to you. At the young age of 26, Mady was permanently silenced when she was killed by her abuser in November 2022.

Mady’s story deserves to be told and heard LOUDLY.

You’ll get little glimpses of Mady here through her social media posts. Trigger warnings galore folks. This is heavy, it’s also real. Mady’s voice is the one that needs to be heard the loudest.

This is for you, Mady. YOU were enough sweet girl.

Less than a month before Mady died

Press releases don’t heal trauma.

Callie’s last texts with Mady’s final abuser

There is never a reason to put your hands on someone else unless your safety is being threatened.

A picture speaks a thousand words.
My heart is so broken reading these.
Hi gorgeous 🙂
💔
Mama Madz with Callie’s baby boy

Sweet Mady girl you were nurturing, selfless, always made to be the strong one. You were Callie’s rock and she was yours. You both found love in each other that the adults in your worlds were not capable of giving.

For a little UPDATE on this blog and Callie, go here!

Rise Up by Andra Day

You’re broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry go round
And you can’t find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
And move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains

And I’ll rise up
I’ll rise like the day
I’ll rise up
I’ll rise unafraid
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousand times again
And I’ll rise up
High like the waves
I’ll rise up
In spite of the ache
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousand times again

For you
For you
For you
For you

When the silence isn’t quiet
And it feels like it’s getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we’ll take the world to its feet
And move mountains
Bring it to its feet
And move mountains

And I’ll rise up
I’ll rise like the day
I’ll rise up
I’ll rise unafraid
I’ll rise up
And I’ll do it a thousand times again

For you
For you
For you
For you

All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
And we will rise
We will rise
We’ll rise, oh, oh
We’ll rise

I’ll rise up
Rise like the day
I’ll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousand times again
And we’ll rise up
High like the waves
We’ll rise up
In spite of the ache
We’ll rise up
And we’ll do it a thousand times again

For you
For you
For you
For you

**Val — if you ever read this: You are one of the most insightful and perceptive women I have ever met. You’ve changed so many lives, mine and Mady’s included. When you think Probation Officer, the complete opposite is Val. You were the closest thing Mady had to a mom. You didn’t choose that spot. It chose you and you hit it out of the park for the short time you were a ray of sunshine in her life. Thank you will never be enough.

Quick story: Rewind to 2019 when I took over drug court. It was my first graduation and I was new to felony land. I was naïve/lacked insight & assumed one of the black Defendants graduating wouldn’t care if he received a conviction on a class 4 possession case instead of a dismissal. Val looked at me perplexed and matter of factly said “why would you assume that?” I think of that exchange daily. I dismissed his case that day. I’m thankful for people like Val who felt comfortable challenging my norm. Keep it up.

**I called Callie’s public defender immediately while this was ongoing to report myself and recused myself from her prosecution. I value my ethics, given the circumstances I’d make the choice again and again and again with Callie.

There are many more pieces to Mady’s story…. stay tuned.

you are very wrong for not checking your sources….. you depict Jimmy A.k.a Mady’s dad as an evil heartless soul. Try talking to the 3 people he called his Best friends. Never once did you reach out to any of us 3…. you just kept talking bullshit after bullshit how her dad didnt love her or want her around or didnt want to do everything in his power to save her. You are ridiculous to assume Jimmy had no love for his daughter.

    1. I appreciate your perspective. This wasn’t about your perspective or his. Yet again deflecting from the main issues to whine about your narcissist friend. No thank you sir.

  2. I’m Jimmy’s closest cousin and relative , so first of all if you’re claiming to know him or about him then you would know his name is/was Jimmy not “Jim”. Secondly you’re only giving the public your perspective of what you saw and not from a families side as to what happened , so before you continue acting as some sort of savior to Mady. You’d better get your facts straight because you’re going to need to do some redacting as to what you have put in print about my cousin and family by defaming their names AFTER they’re deceased and obviously cannot respond to your allegations . So your story (and that’s what it is… a story) sounds like it’s more about you attempting to be some sort of hero!!!! My question to you is why then didn’t you post and release this while Jimmy was still alive, (I think we all know the answer to that question) I KNOW THE TRUTH and am easy to find……. JIMMY LYNCH

    1. Learning exercise for you Jimmy. My truth is true. Your truth is true. Both of those statements are not mutually exclusive. Meaning, given our different perspectives, both can be true. I’m not going to sit here and mansplain like you did me, because it sounds a lot like “Your truth isn’t true because my truth is truer.” Those debates are fruitless whining.

As Mady’s “father’s closest relative”, I’d personally be more concerned that a young girl in my family was sex trafficked and I didn’t do anything to help her. To each their own.

      1. So you were a prosecutor and are an Assistant States Attorney? Sounds more like a grade school playground tirade …… I’m not going to sit here and mansplain like you did me, because it sounds a lot like “Your truth isn’t true because my truth is truer. your words not mine . How do you know if i did or did not do anything to help Mady? You are completely clueless and i mean that with the utmost respect, So go give yourself another pat on the back for your self gratifying article you posted. IYKYK

      2. Prosecutor is used interchangeably with states attorney. Our job is to represent the People versus public defenders who represent Defendants.

I stand by my statement as a whole.

I’ll finish it for you….. “Those debates are fruitless whining.”

I wrongly assumed my response was clear: I’m not going to engage in an argument with you over your big feelings with no facts.

My opinion hasn’t changed, although I’m open to it, which is:

“I’d personally be more concerned that a young girl in my family was sex trafficked and I didn’t do anything to help her.”

You could choose to use this space to provide facts versus engage in fruitless whining.

Until then, to each their own & thanks for the inspiration.
